Week 7

I feel that as an artist I very much fit into the global competition. While most people would not consider computer animators to be an outsourced job, there is a great deal of competition with a great deal of talented animators in China and Japan, and the popularity of Anime (which isn't really my cup of tea) seems to be a fairly large threat in my job security. Also, with the ever-changing technology, the globalization of the world will cause my computer-based career to be ever-changing and expanding. Therefore, I feel that as an animator I will face the effects of globalization as much as anyone.

Week 5-Write about your experience at the foundation forward? What useful information did you receive? What do you wish you would have received that you didn't get that day? If you did not attend foundation forward, what did you do that day?

Foundation forward was both confusing and helpful at the same time. I really thought for sure that by the end of foundation forward I would come out of there with a clean mind and decision. The videos that they showed kinda threw me off a bit. They didnt provide as much information as I had hoped for. The lunch, however, was very helpful. I was able to talk one on one with all the faculty in the fine arts department which really helped me to make my decision

Week 6-Is Otis what you expected? Reflecting back to the days before you attended Otis, what did you expect to experience or happen? How is that that different from your actual experience so far?

Otis is totally not what I had expected. I have made so many new friends and gained so much more knowledge than I ever thought possible. Everyone that I've met has become really close to me and I feel like we're all this really happy family now. I love my section and Im going to miss them so much when the semester ends. I have learned so many new drawing techniches. I have come so far and still expect to go further

Week 7-Where do you as an artist and individual fit into the global competition and opportunities of the day, and how can you collaborate with other artists or designers globally?

Artists and designers basically rule the world if you think about it. Everything involves are in some way. Cars involve artists to design them. Advertisments, tv, magazines, all the media around us is designed and created my artists. I believe that having all these connections with artists now will some day help me to collaborate with greater things in the future. The art world is all connected

Week 8-Friedman writes of how digitization of many basic tasks has changed the way we work and communicate. How do you or how will you make use of web-based technology or computer software available in your discipline or field?

Photography is frequently used in the web/computer world. Film is mostly outdated and most things are digital now. With the help of the internet and programs such as photoshop the possibilies are endless for an artist. Its a way to put myself out there and fix up my photos to stand out. I will definitely use computers a lot in my future and I look forward to it

Week 9-Does your art make any kind of social or political statement? What do you think about art or artists that make social or political statements? Is it the responsibility of the artist to comment on or raise public awareness?

my art so far hasnt made any strong statements but I hope to create things in the future that help raise awareness for things that I feel strongly about. I have a lot of respect for artists that are trying to make a statement. It takes a lot of guts to do that. You never know how people will react to it and you might even make a bad reputation for yourself. I do think it's important to speak how you feel and theres no stronger way to show it than visually

Week 10-What contributions have you made to the community of artists at Otis? What would you like to contribute while you are here as a student?

I feel that I have established some very strong relationships this year. I feel very hopeful and confident that my future will bring great things especially with the support of my peers. I hope to accomplish great things from being at Otis. I hope to learn new skills as an artist so that someday I will be able to practice my talent without the help of a teacher. Someday I will make a great living off of what I've learned at Otis. I have great faith in myself and what I've learned so far. I love the faculty at Otis and the place and the students. I just have a really strong, good feeling about everything

• Week 1-As you are enrolled in art school, I would make the logical assumption that you consider yourself an artist. I want to know, based on your experience or insight, what is an artist?

WEEK 1

What I think of being as an artist? Hmm… Well first of all I see that there’s a huge difference between from being an artist and a designer. And I see an artist doing more art work than doing any designs. So I see a student in the fine arts major being more an artist than someone like me that is in the Product Design major. Which I only design products but fine arts major creates art from their own perspective. But there is one time that designers consider themselves as an artist and that is when the people outside of the art field can’t tell the difference so both designers and fine art majors are considered the same thing.

• Week 2-How has the experience of attending Otis affected your art or perception?

WEEK 2

Well, first of all, if you were to attend any type of school, the student that attends the school will learn something. And from my own experience, I have learned many skills, techniques and more from my professors. I recently looked back at my work from sophomore year until my present work and there was a huge difference in skill and quality. The quality in my presentation board was just so much greater and my skill to make things, my knowledge in that department has expanded tremendously. I totally agree that OTIS has affected my art.

• Week 3-In what ways do you think living in California, near the movie industry to be specific, influences your art?

WEEK 3
Living in California eh? Umm…. I lived in California all my life and it’s a little harder to see how much the movie industry has influenced my art. I mean compared to the other students that come from the mid states, where they really don’t have anything going on. I agree that the movie industry has influenced my art work because the movie industry, celebrities, and other types of media have a huge affect on art, trends, apparel, automobiles and etc. If you notice, as being a designer, you would have to design for the client, which could be from a toy company like Matel. And they want a toy from the new kid’s movie that would be good example on how the movie industry influences my art.

• Week 4-What role will improved writing play in your life as an artist? Why write? If you’re an artist, what good will writing an essay do for you?

WEEK 4

In my own opinion, I really thought it was pointless to learn English in an art institute.
But there are really good reasons why an artist should take English courses in an art school. Having improved writing could help you in places when you write your resumes, proposals for your product, description on your theories, etc. Just knowing on how to write an excellent paper, will get you jobs because mainly employers want an intelligent designer who knows how to describe his/her ideas onto paper.

• Week 5-Write about your experience at the foundation forward? What useful information did you receive? What do you wish you would have received that you didn't get that day? If you did not attend foundation forward, what did you do that day?

WEEK 5

My experience at foundation forward was awesome because it really helps you narrow down your choices. I remember when I came into OTIS as a foundation student, I had no clue which major to go into because there were so many choices that the student could join. Soon as I started watching the videos of all the majors, telling us what they were all about, I narrowed down from four possible choices to two majors. After the videos, the best way I narrowed it down to one major was talking to the head person for the majors. They answered most of my questions and that was where I made my choice for which major to attend. And ever since then, I don’t regret going into the major that I’m still in.

• Week 6-Is Otis what you expected? Reflecting back to the days before you attended Otis, what did you expect to experience or happen? How is that that different from your actual experience so far?

WEEK 6

Before I attended OTIS, I really had no clue on how the campus was going to be like. But one thing was for sure, I thought the amount of people that attendee OTIS was a lot more but the school only had about six hundred people. That was like one third of the amount of my high school graduating class. So it was kind of odd of seeing so little people at the school and the fact that the school only had two buildings. Haha that was pretty funny when I first attended OTIS. Since I’ve been attending the school for three years, my experience at the school has been great but the fact that the school is so small still bothers me. But having that small class benefits me from getting all the help/advice that I need.

• Week 7-Where do you as an artist and individual fit into the global competition and opportunities of the day, and how can you collaborate with other artists or designers globally?

WEEK 7

As being an artist, my position in the world would have to me a like a pawn in a chess game. Small pieces those are able to make small moves but make a difference in the end. That’s how I see myself in the world, playing a small part to make a difference in the world, such as designing new designs for wheelchairs, medical products, etc. I would probably collaborate with other designers by communicating with other designers in other companies for a joint progress or having my own design group. Another way to connect with other designers would be like in the transportation department. The US building for Toyota has designers and the building in Japan also have designers and they both communicate to develop the new car design.

• Week 8-Friedman writes of how digitization of many basic tasks has changed the way we work and communicate. How do you or how will you make use of web-based technology or computer software available in your discipline or field?

WEEK 8

I’m already using so much technology and the computer is one type of technology that I use to my disposal. I use several software to enhance or to help me out on my design in my major. One of the main programs we use is Rhino 4, it’s a program which you could design 3D objects and with this program it gives you the option to get dimension you need or 3D file. The file allows you to print the object you made on a 3D printer. This is how we make some prototypes for our major.

• Week 9-Does your art make any kind of social or political statement? What do you think about art or artists that make social or political statements? Is it the responsibility of the artist to comment on or raise public awareness?

WEEK 9

My art doesn’t make any social or political statement. Honestly I’m kind of confused about this question. But if I’m right, some of my products make a social statement. For example, the wheelchair that I designed has a new look which will give the handicap the cool new look. I decided to make this wheelchair because so many people look at people that are in wheelchairs with pity, which the handicaps don’t like at all. I don’t think that it’s the artist’s responsibility to raise public awareness. Artists are like any other person and they have the choice to care or not.

• Week 10-What contributions have you made to the community of artists at Otis? What would you like to contribute while you are here as a student?

WEEK 10

The contributions are not too much but I have gathered a good amount of foundation students and helped them choose their majors carefully. Not only that, I also helped many of my fellow IPD (Interactive Product Design) students with their drawing skills, computer, and projects. Since I have one more year left, I would like to contribute to help my major become strong.

Because I have a diverse back round. I fit into a more international artistic community. I can collaborate with other artists by showing and expressing my cultural knowledge through my art.
